All About Engineered Wood Floors
by Bogdan Klejn 2007-10-07 - Planning & DesignEngineered hardwood flooring is produced by adhering layers of laminate veneer with real wood. Each plank is created with three to five layers of hardwood, layered in a cross-grain fashion and glued or laminated together under high heat and pressure. Consequently, they are very durable. Engineered hardwood planks are more stable in changes in humidity and moisture than normal wood flooring. This is because the wood plies are layered on top of each other in reverse directions, which counters the normal expansion and contraction of the wood.
Therefore, in a moist environment an engineered hardwood floor is a better choice than a solid wood floor. One of the beauties of engineered hardwood flooring is that it can be floated, glued, stapled, and nailed down over a number of different kinds of sub-floors and can be used on all levels of a building. The costs for engineered flooring can also be kept down by using an expensive wood for the finished layer while using less expensive timber in lower layers.
Engineered hardwood flooring can be sanded and stained (or varnished) in the same manner as solid hardwood flooring. It is also available in the same widths and thicknesses as natural hardwood both in strip style and wither plank floor boards. Although the cost of engineered flooring is similar to that of solid hardwood flooring, the installation costs are much lower. This is because the wood is very even and flat as well as having easily matched grain and color.
If you love the look of hardwood floors and walls but don’t want to risk the effects of expansion and contraction of the wood, engineered flooring offers you a genuine alternative that has all the benefits and none of the downsides of solid wood. You can browse images on the internet to get an idea of the varieties of grains and color available in engineered hardwood flooring or visit showrooms. Once you have decided upon the finish you want, look for flooring specialists who are experienced in installing an engineered hardwood floor. If you do your due diligence, you will soon be the proud owner of beautiful looking flooring.
